I think we can all agree that bread has long been on everyones no-no list for healthy eating. With its high carbohydrate content, bread is often one of the first things to go when someone wants to change their diet up.

But what if I told you that you could eat a healthy diet AND keep bread on the plate (without needing to bake your own.) While bread is a source of carbohydrates, bread can also be an excellent source of fiber and pack a bit of a protein punch as well if selected carefully.

Hey, I’m Lauren, I’m a dietitian on a mission to make heathy eating feel easy and doable for you and I’m here to help you pick a higher protein bread at the store! Many bread options only have 1 to 3 grams of protein per slice, but there are some brands that can add a boost of 5 or more grams protein and help you meet your protein goals.

This bread round up features higher protein store-bought breads that can boost the protein content of your meal by 5 to 16 grams of protein per serving. Want to take your sandwich from 15 grams of protein to 20+ grams of protein simply by swapping out your bread? Then this list is for you!

Should you be eating bread?

Despite almost everyone being in their sourdough baking era, bread often maintains a bad reputation in the health and wellness space… but why?

There are a variety of reasons… some thinking that eating lower carbohydrate is the best route to take for health while others will continue to eat carbohydrates but view bread as a poor source of those carbohydrates.

While some types of bread are examples of very refined carbohydrates, there are also plenty of bread options that are high in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and even have some protein! And no, you do not have to start baking all of your bread from scratch in order to build a healthy bread… you can definitely find some at the grocery store that can work for you.

While you do not need to eat bread to maintain your health, bread can be an easy and nutrient dense carbohydrate that you can add to your plate and enhance your nutrition, increase overall meal satisfaction, and ultimately make it easier for you to stick to your health and wellness goals.

How to pick a higher protein bread:

There are so many breads to choose from at the grocery store and you may feel overwhelmed trying to pick the best one!

While the options may feel endless, there are quite a few balanced bread options that you can select. I like to consider grain source and fiber content, but today we are focusing on protein so here are some tips to help you pick a higher protein bread:

  1. Look at the ingredients: many breads that have had seeds or nuts added to them tend to be a little bit higher in protein.

  2. Choose a less refined option: breads that include more whole grains tend to be slightly higher in fiber.

  3. Check the protein line: you won’t pick a higher protein bread if you don’t look at the label! If I want to pick a higher protein bread from the store, I look at the label and try to pick one that has at least 5 grams of protein per slice.

Beyond selecting a higher protein bread to begin with, remember that you can always include a protein between your pieces of bread as well. Chicken, deli meat, sliced meat, tofu, canned tuna, and other protein foods are a great way to increase the protein content of your meal and balance out the breads carbohydrate content.

Sliced Breads:

I ranked these breads from least to greatest on the protein content. These breads range from 5 grams of protein up to 11 grams of protein per and many are readily available at your local grocery store! There are also plenty of bread options that have 8+ grams of protein per two slices of bread, but my focus here was the single slice protein content.

Remember that you can always adjust your serving size to make sure the bread that you choose works best for you and most of these bread options will add to the main protein source that you have at that meal which could be eggs, deli meat, meat, tofu, beans, and more!
