Peppermint Chocolate Protein Shake
If you are looking for an easy way to boost your protein intake then high protein smoothie or shake recipes have probably caught your eye.
From protein powder to greek yogurt, cottage cheese to silken tofu, there really are so many creative ways to add protein to your smoothie recipes (if you want a list of ideas, check out my roundup with ideas for how to add protein to smoothies.)
This peppermint chocolate protein shake is one of my favorite protein shake recipes to make when I want some protein but in a way that tastes like dessert. While it may be filled with seasonal peppermint flavors, I invite you to enjoy the almost 40 grams of protein this protein shake has to offer all year long!
Let’s get to the recipe:
Why you’ll love this chocolate protein shake with peppermint:
You’ll love this high protein smoothie recipe because it is:
Packed with protein:. This protein smoothie recipe has almost 40 grams of protein coming from ultra-filtered Fairlife chocolate milk (or a Core Power) and your favorite chocolate protein powder. The protein content may vary slightly depending on which protein powder you choose to use.
Easy to make: This protein smoothie only calls for a few ingredients and comes together in one blender!
Full of peppermint chocolate flavor: peppermint extract is the only ingredient you’ll need for this peppermint shake… trust me, a little goes a long way. Combine that with chocolate protein powder, cocoa powder, and Fairlife chocolate milk for a sip full of peppermint chocolate flavor!
Customizable: Change the level of sweetness, adjust your peppermint, change your toppings, or feel free to blend in some chunks of dark chocolate or chocolate chips for a customized protein smoothie that tastes like dessert.
You’re going to love this peppermint chocolate protein shake recipe! Now let’s get into the flavorful ingredients you will need to make it:
Ingredients you’ll need:
This peppermint and chocolate smoothie only calls for a few ingredients and one blender. Here are the ingredients you will need:
Ultra-filtered Fairlife Chocolate Milk- Fairlife chocolate milk has a higher protein content than regular milk with 13 grams of protein per cup. You can use plain Fairlife milk for a lighter chocolate flavor, a Core Power for more protein, or any milk of choice if you had another option on hand.
Frozen banana: We will add 1/2 a frozen banana for nutrition, sweetness, and to enhance the creamy texture of this protein smoothie recipe. I like to stick with half a banana to minimize the powerful banana flavor and make sure the peppermint chocolate flavor shines through.
Frozen riced cauliflower: This is a secret ingredient for my smoothie recipes and serves as the ice substitute while adding almost flavorless nutrition. You can swap this for ice if you do not have riced cauliflower on hand.
Peppermint extract: This will add the peppermint flavor but be sure to add it in small amounts because a little bit goes a long way and it can get spicy and bitter if you overdo it!
Chocolate protein powder: My favorites are this whey protein powder by Optimum Nutrition OR this chocolate protein powder. Feel free to use your favorite.
Cacao powder: Just a sprinkle for an extra decadent chocolate flavor.
Maple syrup OR Honey: This will add a little bit of sweetness to balance out the bitterness of cacao powder. Feel free to add this to taste.
Toppings: I recommend adding some whipped cream and crushed peppermint to your peppermint chocolate protein shake for extra flavor and fun!
That’s all you’ll need!

Swaps, substitutions, and serving suggestions:
As a dietitian, I love protein smoothie recipes because they can be made in a variety of ways and are fully customizable. Here are a few suggestions I have for this recipe.
Add chunks of chocolate: If you want this high protein smoothie recipe to taste even more like a dessert then you can add chocolate chips or dark chocolate to the blender for little bite size pieces of chocolate in your smoothie.
Change your toppings: Feel free to add greek yogurt, cool whip, a dark chocolate shell, or other fun toppings to this smoothie recipe.
Swap your mint flavor: If you prefer a mint chocolate smoothie recipe instead then you can simply swap your peppermint extract for mint extract to easily change the flavor profile!
Add other nutritious ingredients: Ground flax seed and chia seeds are always easy additions to smoothie recipes.
Change your protein source: I like to use chocolate protein powder in this recipe for the chocolate flavor but you could easily use greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or just the Fairlife chocolate milk if you wanted to make this smoothie for a child.

Recipe FAQ:
Can this protein shake be prepped ahead of time?
You can prep portions of this smoothie ahead of time to make it easy to toss into a blender. I would recommend adding your riced cauliflower, banana, cocoa powder, and protein powder to a bag and storing it in your freezer.
Then, when you are ready to make your shake, pour the contents of the bag into the blender and add your Fairlife chocolate milk, honey, and peppermint extract then blend until smooth!
How many grams of protein are in this chocolate protein shake?
I calculated the macros for this shake by hand and this chocolate peppermint protein shake has 400 calories, 39 grams of protein, 51 grams of carbohydrates, and 5 grams of fat. The recipe card is a good jumping off point but not fully accurate.
