Apple Crisp Granola Recipe

What is apple crisp granola?

Apple crisp granola puts the perfect fall twist on a simple granola recipe. Here’s why you’ll love having this granola on hand for fall:

  • It’s coated in a sweetened brown butter sauce: one key ingredient for this fall granola recipe is the browned butter that is lightly sweetened with maple syrup and brown sugar. Brown butter is a cozy spin on recipes that call for butter and I think it works perfectly in this granola.

  • Spiced with fall spices: Cinnamon and a hint of nutmeg enhance all of the fall flavors for this recipe.

  • Makes large, delicious clusters: Baked in a compacted sheet that can be broken apart into large pieces, this recipe makes it easy for you to grab a handful of these apple crisp oatmeal clusters.

  • Filled with heart healthy walnuts: While you can use pecans as well, chopped walnut pieces not only add a delicious crunch to your granola but also add a boost of heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

  • Tossed with baked apple chips: You may be wondering where the apple flavor comes into play with this recipe and here you have the most important ingredient- crispy baked apple chips. These add the perfect fall flavor but stay nice and crispy in your granola.

  • Versatile: You can enjoy handfuls of this granola recipe like they’re a mini apple crisp dessert, sprinkle the clusters onto high protein greek yogurt bowls, or even press them into bars for a tasty apple crisp granola bar. No matter how you serve it, this recipe is delicious.

  • Can be stored for weeks: While it likely won’t last this long, you can store this granola in an air tight container for two weeks to a month in the pantry. Enjoy it all fall long!

How to make raspberry jam with chia seeds:

Ingredients:

  1. Old fashioned oats: Old fashioned oats are the base of your granola recipe and are rich in heart healthy, soluble fiber.

  2. Oat flour: I like to add some oat flour to my granola recipes because I find that the clusters stick together better than just granola with oats.

  3. Walnut pieces: Walnuts add heart healthy fatty acids as well as some crunch to your recipe. You can also substitute walnuts for pecan pieces if preferred.

  4. Butter: This is an absolutely essential ingredient and should not be substituted for another. We will brown the butter which will add a savory, nutty flavor to your granola recipe and help keep your clusters together. If you havn’t started baking with brown butter, you need to start!

  5. Brown sugar: All apple crisp dessert recipes need a hint of brown sugar flavors, and this granola recipe is no different! This recipe does call for less brown sugar, especially with the addition of maple syrup.

  6. Maple syrup: Use 100% maple syrup, not pancake syrup, to add sweetness and help your granola clusters stick together.

  7. Cinnamon: Spicy cinnamon is essential in an apple crisp dessert recipe.

  8. Nutmeg: Just a hint to enhance fall flavors.

  9. Salt: To balance out the sweet.

  10. Baked Crunchy Apples: Feel free to use store-bought or make your own. These are the number one most important ingredient, be sure to use baked apple chips! Here is the brand I bought.

That’s it! .

Instructions:

Step 1:

Add your butter to a medium sauce pan and warm over medium heat until your butter begins to bubble and foam. Continue to stir your butter and as the bubbles and foam begin to subside, you will notice the butter beginning to turn golden brown and smelling nutty and delicious. This will take ~12 minutes.

Turn your heat to low.

Step 2:

Once you turn your heat to low add in your maple syrup, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg and stir it together with your brown butter. Continue to stir until all of the sugar is fully melted and you have a delicious maple syrup and brown butter sauce. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside.

Step 3:

Add your old fashioned oats, oat flour, and chopped walnut pieces to a medium mixing bowl.

Step 4:

Pour your brown butter mixture over your oats and stir together until everything is well coated and combined.

Step 5:

Line a medium baking sheet with parchment paper and then pour your granola onto the sheet. Gently press your granola into a compact, thin layer being sure to press it all the way to the edges. The tighter you press your granola together, the better your clusters will stick together.

Place your granola in the oven and bake at 325 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Once it is done baking, remove the granola from the oven and allow it to cool completely.

Step 6:

Once your granola is fully cooled, break your apple crisp granola sheet into large granola clusters and mix in your crushed apple chips. Store in an air tight container and enjoy!

How to add apples to granola recipes?

From applesauce to freshly sliced apples, there are plenty of ways that you can add the apple flavor to your homemade granola recipe. However, I do think that the best way to add the apple flavor to THIS apple crisp granola recipe is to use baked apple chips.

Baked apple chips are simply thinly sliced apples that have been baked until they have a crispy, chip like texture. With almost no moisture, baked apple chips stay crispy as your granola sits in the pantry and they also won’t make your oats soft. My favorite brand are the Bare Apple Chips.

Other options that you could do to add the flavor of apples but without the moisture of apples would be to stir in dried apples or freeze dried apples. All of these options will work, but my number one recommendation are the crispy baked apple chips.
