While some people prefer to drink their smoothies through a straw, I personally like a smoothie that is thick enough to be eaten with a spoon. I find creamy smoothies to be more filling than thinner smoothies and simply enjoy the texture more!

Do you feel the same but can’t get your smoothies to thicken up? Here are 5 easy tips on how to make smoothies creamy and take it from straw to spoon worthy.

How to make a creamy smoothie:

1) Use frozen ingredients in your smoothie

The easiest way to a thick smoothie is to use frozen fruit instead of fresh fruit and ice. Using frozen fruit or frozen vegetables in smoothies not only adds tons of healthy nutrients but it also serves as the “ice” of your smoothie without watering it down! Here are my favorite ingredient recommendations:

  1. The best frozen fruit for smoothies: while just about any frozen fruit will do, I find that frozen bananas, frozen berry blends, frozen mango, and frozen pineapple are fantastic ingredients for a smoothie that really thicken up the consistency.

  2. The best frozen vegetables for smoothies: I love to use smoothies as a way to get more vegetables into my diet. Frozen options like riced cauliflower, spinach, kale, and even beans can be great additions to a smoothie.

2) Only add liquid as needed

Another easy way to thicken up your smoothie is to reduce the amount of liquid that you use. Remember, you can always add but you cannot take away! Personally, I like to start with a 1: 3/4 to 1 ratio of frozen ingredients to liquid meaning for every cup of frozen ingredients I’ll add 3/4 cup of liquid and then slowly add in more liquid as needed to blend the smoothie into the consistency that I like. Here are my favorite liquids to use in a smoothie:

  1. The best liquids for smoothies: The liquid that you choose to add to your smoothie is an easy way to bump up the nutrition by adding vitamins, minerals, protein, and even probiotics. Milk, plain kefir, Fairlife chocolate milk, coconut water, core power, green juice, or even 100% juice are great ways to add some extra nutrition through your liquid.

3) Add a protein powder

You can make plenty of smoothies without protein powder but adding protein powder in does help increase the thickness of the smoothie itself!

Whey protein powder is what I generally recommend because it has a high amount of branched chain amino acids and incorporates into smoothies and recipes really well. Other good protein powder options that can be added to smoothies are egg white protein powder, collagen powder, or a plant based protein powder.

4) Blend in a powdered pudding mix

Powdered pudding mix will take your smoothie from drinkable to spoon worthy and is the perfect ingredient to add if you want to make a smoothie thick enough for a bowl. Not only does powdered pudding mix enhance the creaminess but it also adds a delicious flavor and has lots of flavors to choose from!

My favorite pudding mix flavors to include are:

5) Blend blend blend

Finally, an easy tip to help you make a creamy smoothie is to make sure you blend your smoothie ENOUGH. Blending your smoothie enough will not only chop up all of the ingredients better but it also incorporates a bit of air into the smoothie and leads to a creamier product. I blend mine for at least one minute and make sure to stir the ingredients a few times throughout.

What is the best blender to make smoothies? I personally recommend the Ninja Blender. Its large blender is great for making multiple smoothies but they also offer individual blender cups which are perfect for when you make a smoothie for one!
