20 Minute Chicken Pita Wraps

Every week I ask my husband, “what sounds good for dinner this week?”

Every week my husband answers with “how about those chicken pita wraps?”

To be honest, I can’t blame him! These pita wraps are truly the perfect weeknight dinner that is healthy, delicious, and on your table in a flash. All you have to do is cook your well seasoned chicken, prep your veggie salad, and then simply layer all of your toppings of choice onto a whole wheat pita bread.

There are tons of ways that you can make chicken pita wraps, so I’m sharing my own personal favorite way build them up starting with well-seasoned thinly sliced chicken breast. While you can use any seasonings of choice for you chicken, I love to flavor mine with curry powder and garam masala for stand out flavors in your wrap.

Then, you slather a whole wheat pita bread with tzatziki (or hummus… or both…), cooked chicken, your cucumber and tomato blend, and tasty toppings like Kalamata olives, peperoncini peppers, and a sprinkle of feta cheese for a delicious dinner thats ready in under 20 minutes.

Let’s get to the recipe!

Why you’ll love these chicken pita wraps:

You’ll love these pita wraps because they are:

  • Cooked in one pot: Ok, ok, yes you’ll also have to prep your veggies on a cutting board or a veggie chopped but as far as cooking goes, you’ll only need one pot. Simply slice your chicken, season, and cook it in one large pot over medium heat. That’s all the cooking you’ll have to do for this recipe!

  • Customizable: Feel free to add toppings of choice. My favorites are Kalamata olives, tzatziki, peperoncini peppers, and feta cheese! You could easily add other flavors like chopped lettuce, roasted red peppers, or some pickled jalapeños if you want a little bit of spice.

  • Veggie rich: You’ll top your chicken pita wraps with a veggie salad made with tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, and fiber rich garbanzo beans. This adds the color to your meal and also loads it with fresh flavors.

  • Full of seasoned chicken: Thinly sliced chicken tossed in flavorful seasonings like curry powder and garam masala add protein and flavor to each pita wrap.

  • Meal prep friendly: You can prep all of your components on a sunday and build up pita wraps throughout your week for a healthy meal prep lunch idea!

These each chicken pita wraps are a family friendly dinner that you’ll love having in your weekly rotation. For my kids, I simply keep all of the components separate so that it’s easy to eat and they love it every time!

Ingredients you’ll need:

Here’s what you’ll need for your pita wraps:

  • Chicken breast- sliced lengthwise into thin tenders. This will allow the seasoning to coat each chicken piece really well and also helps cut down on cooking time so that your chicken is ready, faster!

  • Whole wheat pita bread- I like to buy whole wheat pita bread for my wraps and then layer plenty of tzatziki or hummus onto it. If you cannot find pita bread, naan flatbreads will also work for this recipe! I do recommend warming up your bread slightly so that it is more malleable.

  • Tzatziki- This is the spread you’ll add to your pita wraps. You could swap this for hummus if preferred.

  • Garbanzo beans- For a boost of fiber and plant-based protein… which we all need a little bit more of in our lives. Add these if you want to!

  • Cherry tomatoes- I like to use cherry tomatoes because they have less juice and hold their shape a little bit better when you chop them. They’re perfect for a veggie chopper!

  • Cucumber- Peeled or not peeled, up to you.

  • Red onion- Add this to taste and dice it VERY small. I used 1/2 of a red onion.

  • Olive oil- This will be added to both your chicken and the veggie salad to help the seasonings stick to each bite.

  • Seasonings: You can really season your pita wrap chicken with whatever seasonings you prefer but I love to use curry powder, garam masala, ground coriander, salt, and pepper for my chicken to really stand out in the wrap.

  • Dried italian seasoning: Sprinkle this onto your veggie salad for some herby flavor.

  • Recommended toppings- top your pita wraps with Kalamata olives, peperoncini peppers, diced avocado, and a sprinkle of feta cheese for plenty of fresh flavor.

That’s all you’ll need!

Step by Step Instructions:

Now let’s walk through how to make these easy pita wraps:

Step 1:

Slice your chicken breast into evenly sized long, thin strips to make chicken tenderloins. Place your thinly sliced chicken into a bowl and add your olive oil, curry powder, garam masala, ground coriander, garlic salt, and pepper then toss until everything is well coated. Adjust seasonings if needed.

Warm a large pan over medium heat for 3 minutes, until it is fully warm, then add your seasoned chicken to the pan and spread it evenly. Cook for 5 minutes on one side, then flip your chicken and cook for another 5-7 minutes or until your chicken tenders are fully cooked through and 165 internal temp (~10-12 minutes total).

Remove your chicken from the pan and set aside.

LTN Tip- Buy a veggie chopper! Trust me, it’s one of my favorite kitchen items to have and really cuts down on prep time.

Swaps, substitutions, and suggestions:

Here are a few changes you can make to this recipe:

  • Change your toppings: I added all of my personal favorite flavors to this recipe but you can use whatever toppings you prefer! Some other suggestions would be to add spinach, leafy greens, roasted peppers, bell peppers, and more.

  • Change your protein: We always make chicken pita wraps for our weeknight dinner but you can easily turn these into steak pita wraps or even shrimp pita wraps by swapping your protein. If you prefer a vegetarian pita wrap, you can use falafels or even roasted chickpeas for your protein.

  • Change how you serve it: Want this to be more meal prep friendly? Turn it into a bowl and skip the pita bread! I would simply prep some jasmine or basmati rice and then add your chicken, veggie salad, tzatziki, and toppings of choice to each bowl.

  • Add more flavor: You can easily add a dressing to your veggie salad, add a scoop of hummus, or other sauces to boost the flavor of each pita wrap.

Recipe FAQ:

  1. Do I have to use chicken breast for pita wraps?

    1. No, you can easily swap your chicken breast for pre-sliced chicken tenders, chicken thighs, or even skip the cooking all together and go for a cooked rotisserie chicken. If you want to try something other than chicken, you can try steak, fish, shrimp, or other protein options.

  2. Are pita wraps with chicken healthy?

    1. These pita wraps are a fantastic example of a balanced dinner. They have a fiber rich carbohydrate with the whole wheat pita bread, a lean protein from the chicken, fiber from chickpeas, a color from your veggie salad, and healthy fats with the toppings like avocado.

These are absolutely a healthy dinner idea and one I recommend adding to your weekly rotation for an easy, go-to dinner recipe.

  3. Can I meal prep pita wraps?

    1. You can pre-prepare all of your ingredients so that assembly is easy but I do recommend prepping your wraps right before you are going to eat them to avoid soggy bread.

If needed, you can prep these wraps in the morning to enjoy for a health meal prep lunch at lunchtime.
